Easter Gift Giving

Supermarket shelves packed full of chocolate Easter eggs and the smell of hot cross buns beginning to fill the house can only mean one thing. However, enjoyment of these traditional Easter holiday treats shouldn’t mean you have to stop your organic online grocery delivery in favour of your local supermarket. This year we’ve been working hard to ensure our virtual selves are brimming with all the organic Easter goodies you could wish for. We’re talking the origins of the Easter egg, from a 13th century tradition of decorating to today’s organic chocolate delights from Cocoa Loco. We also take a look at the relationship between hot cross buns and Good Friday and leave you drooling for sweet accompaniments to an afternoon tea with Nourish’s Macaroons.

Whether to treat yourself or to send to a loved one, we think these tasty delights deserve a spot in your Easter 2021 organic food delivery…

Loco for the Cocoa

Have you ever wondered why we enjoy chocolate eggs at Easter? Well, historically the egg is a symbol of new life and was largely associated with ancient festivals celebrating the spring. Eggs were also forbidden during the Lent period of Christian celebrations, so instead of eating them people would decorate them. This tradition dates all the way back to the 13th century, with decorated eggs largely given to children as a gift.

We’re not too sure what children could have done with a decorated egg, and it seems the Victorians thought the same. They adapted the ritual into gifting satin-covered cardboard eggs filled with Easter gifts. Finally, chocolate eggs were first created in France and Germany in the 19th century and with advancements in chocolate making, we landed upon the hollow eggs we now know and love.

It's not entirely clear why chocolate was chosen as the modern Easter egg form, but we like to think it’s got something to do with it’s deliciousness! And we’re definitely not complaining…

If you’re a chocolate lover like us, just a browse of Cocoa Loco’s collection of Easter treats will have your mouth watering. All of Cocoa Loco’s products are handmade, organic and Fairtrade, produced right here in the UK. Although their Easter goodies might look too good to eat (have you seen their organic Milk Chocolate & Raspberry Easter Egg?!), they manage to taste even better. Their beautiful packaging and careful crafting make these the perfect Easter gift (We recommend the Chunky Chocolate Bunny Bar) – but we wouldn’t blame you for keeping one or two pieces for yourself.

We also have some vegan chocolate favourites, including Cocoa Loco’s Marzipan Egg and Rhythm 108’s Vegan Truffle Eggs.

Hot Cross (Easter) Bunnies

Hot cross buns are an Easter speciality that have even longer historical roots. It is thought that a 12th century Monk was the first to create these yummy buns, adding the cross to honour Good Friday. Rumour has it that the Monk gave the treats to the poor on Good Friday, making them a long-standing custom to this religious day.

However, the buns gained so much popularity over time that they have become a symbol of the wider Easter festivities too. Many households across the country enjoy these sweet and spicy pleasures the minute they hit the shelves!

This year we’ve managed to get our hands on a selection of Authentic Bread Co’s hot cross buns, including new inventive and intriguing flavours. Choose from Chocolate & Orange, Earl Grey & Lemon or classic buns (available in two sizes) to complement your Easter celebrations.

Even better, combine two traditions for a truly happy Easter with Cocoa Loco’s Hot Cross Bun Truffles – the perfect excuse the eat chocolate for breakfast!
