Why Choose Organic Dairy?
It’s not just organic meat that is better for your bod. Organic dairy has around 50% more omega-3 fatty acids than non-organic. Over and above the omegas, organic milk and dairy products contain higher concentrations of iron, vitamin E and some carotenoids. Organic milk also contains less iodine and around 40% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which is linked to a range of health benefits including reduced risk of heart disease, certain cancers and obesity.
Alongside all the health benefits, no other international farming standards deliver higher standards of animal welfare than organic. As well as requiring that animals are genuinely free range, organic standards cover living conditions, food quality, as well as transport and slaughter. Organic dairy cows spend almost all of their time grazing and roaming organic pastures. This is better for the animal and produces higher quality milk. They are generally not pushed to their milk producing limits in the same way other cows can be. Average yields in organic milk production are around a quarter less than in intensive production.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; it all comes back to the soil. By farming organically, organic dairy farms are helping improve the soil health. Find out more about the soil here.
