At Eversfield Organic, animal welfare, transparency, and thoughtful sourcing sit at the heart of everything we do. We know that for some, the combination of organic and Halal might seem unfamiliar — even conflicting. So let us be clear from the start: we will never offer anything that doesn't fully meet our organic standards. If we do introduce Halal-certified meat, it will still be 100% Soil Association Organic — raised and processed to the same uncompromising welfare, environmental, and ethical standards you expect from us.
Over the years, many of you have asked: Can Halal meat be organic? And more recently: Will Eversfield ever offer Halal meat? The short answer is yes — and we’re actively seeking a continuous, certified supply so we can make it available to those who want it.
But as with all things at Eversfield, we want to do it the right way.
What Makes Meat Organic?
Let’s start with what we mean when we say “organic.” For us, it’s not just a label — it’s a promise. Organic certification in the UK (under Soil Association standards, which are among the highest in the world) means:
-
Animals are raised outdoors, as naturally as possible
-
No routine antibiotics or growth hormones
-
Certified organic feed
-
No GMOs
-
Strict standards around welfare, transport, and slaughter
We work closely with farmers who share our vision of farming with care — where every creature is respected, and the land is left better than we found it.
What Is Halal Meat?
Halal, an Arabic word meaning “permissible,” refers to meat prepared according to Islamic dietary laws. This includes a specific method of slaughter that involves:
-
A swift, single cut to the throat with a sharp blade
-
The recitation of a prayer
-
Draining of the blood
-
Ensuring the animal is healthy at the time of slaughter
Importantly, Halal practices are also deeply rooted in compassion and respect for the animal — which aligns closely with many of our own organic values.
Animal Welfare at the Heart
Here’s where it gets nuanced: In organic slaughter, animals must be stunned before being killed to prevent suffering. This is a non-negotiable requirement for Soil Association organic certification, based on animal welfare science.
Some Halal authorities accept pre-stunning, provided it does not kill the animal before the cut. Others do not. The debate is ongoing, and interpretations vary.
At Eversfield, we would only offer Halal meat if:
-
It meets all organic standards — including welfare at slaughter
-
It is certified Halal by a recognised body that permits pre-stunning
-
The process is fully transparent, traceable, and respectful of both ethics and faith
The Search for the Right Supply
We are currently exploring partnerships with organic-certified, Halal-approved abattoirs that use reversible pre-stunning. These are few and far between, but they do exist. Our aim is to provide a continuous, trusted supply so customers who observe Halal can enjoy Eversfield-quality meat with confidence.
As ever, we’ll take our time — because rushing it wouldn’t be right.
Looking Ahead
Offering Halal organic meat is about more than meeting demand — it’s about inclusivity, transparency, and staying true to our values. We’re grateful for the conversations that have sparked this journey, and we promise to keep you updated as we move forward.
If you have questions, thoughts, or would like to register your interest, we’d love to hear from you.
