And Why We’re Proud to Offer Both at Eversfield Organic

At Eversfield Organic, we believe that truly good food begins long before it reaches your plate — with the environment it’s raised in, the welfare it experiences, and the respect we have for nature’s limits. When it comes to sustainable seafood, two terms are often discussed: organic and wild. Both are excellent choices, but they represent very different journeys from water to table.

In light of recent news surrounding concerns about conventional fish farming — including welfare issues, overcrowding and environmental damage — we wanted to take a moment to explain what sets organic and wild fish apart, and why we choose to offer only the highest standards in both categories.

What Makes Organic Fish Organic?

Organic fish are raised in carefully controlled aquaculture environments that meet strict certification standards. This means:

  • Lower stocking densities to reduce stress and disease

  • Clean, well-oxygenated water regularly monitored for quality

  • Organic feed, free from chemical additives, GM ingredients or routine antibiotics

  • Space to swim naturally and freedom from unnecessary interventions

  • Environmental protection, ensuring waters and surrounding ecosystems are respected

Because every aspect of their life cycle is traceable and regulated, these fish can be fully certified organic, giving you confidence in how they’ve been raised.

Organic aquaculture provides a sustainable option that protects oceans from over-fishing and supports the highest possible welfare standards.

Why Wild Fish Aren’t Called Organic

Many people assume that wild fish should automatically be considered organic — after all, they live freely in natural waters. And while wild fish are a wonderful option, full of flavour and natural nutrition, they cannot be certified organicfor one key reason:

We cannot control or verify what they eat or the conditions they live in.

Wild fish are not fed an organic diet, and their environment cannot be monitored or regulated in the same way as an organic farm. Because organic certification requires clear traceability from start to finish, wild fish fall outside the definition — even though they remain an excellent and sustainable choice when caught responsibly.

That’s why at Eversfield Organic, we carefully source our wild fish using responsible fishing practices, prioritising seasonality, respect for marine ecosystems and low environmental impact.

Why This Matters Now

Recent investigations have put conventional salmon farms — particularly large industrial operations — under scrutiny for issues including:

  • Overcrowding and poor welfare conditions

  • Chemical and antibiotic-based treatments

  • Pollution affecting surrounding marine life

  • High mortality rates and disease spread

These are problems we have always rejected.
Our organic fish farms follow strict welfare and environmental protocols, ensuring a far healthier and more sustainable system.

By choosing organic aquaculture or responsibly sourced wild fish, you support a future where seafood is clean, ethical and environmentally positive.
