How Choosing Local This Christmas Helps the Planet, Supports Farmers & Guarantees Unmatched Freshness
“Food miles” has become a familiar phrase in conversations around sustainability — but what does it really mean, and why should we care? At Eversfield Organic, food miles are far more than a marketing term. They’re at the heart of our mission to produce food responsibly, support British farmers and protect the planet for future generations.
As Christmas approaches and families gather around the table, it’s a powerful time to reflect on where our food comes from and the journey it takes to reach our plates. When you choose local, organic, seasonal meat, you’re choosing food with a story — grown with respect, integrity and care at every stage.
🌍 What Are Food Miles?
Food miles refer to the distance food travels from where it’s produced to where it is eaten. The longer that journey, the greater the environmental impact — particularly through fuel usage, emissions, packaging and refrigeration required for long-distance transport.
Most supermarket meat travels hundreds or even thousands of miles before reaching the shelves, often passing through multiple processing sites and distribution hubs.
At Eversfield Organic, we’ve always believed in another way:
Shorter supply chains. Traceable farms. Truly local food.
🦃 A Local Story: Meet Our Turkey Farmer
For Christmas 2025, we’re proud once again to partner with John and his family at Frenchbeer Farm in Devon, just a short journey from our own farm and butchery. Their slow-grown, organic turkeys live free-range lives outdoors with fresh pasture, natural feed and space to roam — raised with the kind of care you can taste.
Because they are so close to us:
-
Transport impact is dramatically reduced
-
Turkeys reach you fresher, not frozen or artificially matured
-
We maintain a genuine relationship with the farm
-
We can check welfare standards in person — not by paperwork
-
Your Christmas centrepiece supports “real farming” instead of industrial scale production
We visit the farm regularly (often with muddy boots!) and know every stage of the process. This transparency is at the core of what we do.
❄️ Why Local & Seasonal Meat Matters
1. Fresher flavour and better quality
Fast supply chains mean less time spent in storage and transit. The result is naturally tender, richly flavoured meat that hasn’t been artificially preserved or transported across borders.
2. Reduced environmental impact
Fewer travel miles means fewer emissions — a simple but powerful way to reduce your carbon footprint.
3. Supporting British farmers & rural communities
Choosing local keeps traditional farming alive, protects countryside heritage and ensures farmers are paid fairly for real craftsmanship.
4. Respect for animals
Smaller, local farms can give animals the space, calm and care they deserve — something impossible in industrial systems.
5. Better for people and the planet
Seasonal eating means farming in harmony with nature, not forcing production out of season through heavy feeding, chemicals or confinement.
🎄 What This Means for Christmas
When you order an Eversfield Organic Christmas turkey, you are:
-
supporting a local family farm, not an industrial chain
-
choosing exceptional quality, flavour and freshness
-
helping protect the planet through lower food miles
-
strengthening the future of real British farming
It’s more than a meal — it’s a vote for a better food system.
❤️ Our Promise
We are committed to keeping supply chains short, transparent and traceable. We work with farmers we know by name, from places we can reach in minutes rather than flights. Because food grown with care tastes better, nourishes better and respects the world we live in.
This Christmas, thank you for choosing local.
Thank you for supporting organic.
Thank you for helping us build a future where food once again has meaning.
From our farms to your family,
The Eversfield Organic Team
