At Eversfield Organic, we believe in knowing exactly where our food comes from — and more importantly, who is behind it. This week, we had the pleasure of visiting one of our trusted local suppliers, Ben and Alice Moseley, who run Summerhill Organic Farm. Nestled in the rolling Devon countryside, Summerhill is a true example of organic farming done the right way — with care, patience and respect for both the land and the animals.
A Family-Run Organic Farm Rooted in Nature
Summerhill is a mixed organic farm run by Ben and Alice, who live on the land with their two daughters, Rosalind and Natasha, and their ever-enthusiastic farm dog, Molly. Their ethos is simple but powerful: to produce quality food through sustainable farming, while sharing the beauty and reality of rural life with others.
They open their gates not just to animals, but to people too - from holiday yurters and walkers to local community groups looking to experience the beauty and calm of organic farmland. Their farm is as much about connection as it is about cultivation.
Meeting Ben and Talking Organic Farming
During our visit, we had the opportunity to sit down with Ben and talk about the changing landscape of organic farming — from the challenges of certification and small-scale production to the rewards of raising animals in harmony with nature.
It’s these conversations that remind us why we do what we do at Eversfield. Working with independent, passionate farmers like Ben allows us to stay connected to the real heart of British organic food — the soil, the animals, and the people.
Meeting the Birds: Ducks and Geese Growing the Natural Way
Of course, no farm visit is complete without meeting the animals themselves. We were delighted to see the ducklings and geese thriving in the fields, full of life and curiosity. The geese are now a good size and nearly ready for finishing, but what stands out most is the way they’ve been raised - slowly, naturally, and with respect for their wellbeing.
Organic poultry farming is a world apart from industrial production. Ben’s birds live longer lives and grow at a natural pace, developing strong skeletons and healthy muscle rather than being rapidly “finished” using hormones or chemical feeds. This slower, more traditional process results in better quality meat — beautifully tender, juicy, and full of flavour — a true reflection of the organic ethos.
Why Local Matters
One of the many things we value about working with Ben at Summerhill is proximity. His farm is just round the corner from us, which means fewer food miles, a smaller carbon footprint, and a genuine local connection between farm and table.
At Christmas time, this partnership really comes to life — when it’s time to collect the geese, we simply pop round to the farm, pick them up directly from Ben and Alice, and bring them back to our butchery to be prepared, packed, and sent to your door in perfect condition. It’s the kind of farm-to-fork traceability that defines who we are as a business — and why our customers trust us.
Supporting British Organic Farming
Visits like these reaffirm how important it is to support local, independent farmers. They’re the backbone of the organic food movement, ensuring high welfare, environmental care, and integrity in every step of the process. By choosing Eversfield Organic, you’re not just buying food — you’re investing in the people and farms who keep sustainable British farming alive.
We left Summerhill inspired, grateful, and proud to work with partners who share our passion for real food, raised the right way.
