Understanding Stunning, Animal Welfare & Transparency at Eversfield Organic

We stand clear on being transparent on this topic.

At Eversfield Organic, we’ve always taken pride in the journey from farm to fork. For many of our customers, it’s not enough to know what they’re eating — they want to know how the animals were raised, handled, and ultimately slaughtered. These conversations are important, and we believe customers deserve full transparency.

Recently, we’ve noticed a growing awareness around terms like “pre-stunned,” and how they relate to welfare standards or religious slaughter. For many people, that terminology no longer provides enough clarity, especially when it comes to the question of whether meat is Halal. We take this feedback seriously — and we want to be unequivocal.

Our Stunning Methods: Humane, Irreversible & Non-Halal

Animal welfare underpins every step of our supply chain, and slaughter is no exception. All of our organic farmers must meet strict welfare standards, and we work closely with certified abattoirs to ensure calm, humane handling.

Here’s how stunning works across species:

  • Beef, Lamb & Pork
Animals are pre-stunned using irreversible stunning methods, ensuring they are completely unconscious before they are quickly dispatched with a bolt to the head.

  • Poultry
Birds are stunned and then swiftly beheaded, a method that prioritises speed and minimises stress.

  • Wild Game
Shot ethically in the field — never with lead shot — as part of careful population management.

We want to be absolutely clear:
Our meat is not Halal, and we do not offer religious slaughter.
All animals are stunned irreversibly and handled in a way that ensures the least possible stress.

Why Irreversible Stunning Matters

Irreversible stunning is important for two fundamental reasons:

  1. Animal Welfare — The animal does not regain consciousness and does not experience stress or pain during slaughter.

  2. Transparency & Trust — Terms such as “pre-stunned” can be broad and open to interpretation. We believe customers deserve accurate, specific information about what they’re buying.

Organic Welfare From Field to Abattoir

Organic certification is a holistic standard — it governs how animals are raised, what they eat, how they are transported, and how they are slaughtered.

  • Our abattoirs are located within an hour of our farms for beef, pork and lamb, reducing transport stress.

  • Poultry is slaughtered directly on-farm, ensuring calm conditions and minimal handling.

  • Every step remains under organic certification, covering both animal welfare and traceability.

These decisions don’t just meet the standard — they reflect what we believe is the right thing to do.

Why This Matters for You

Customers who choose organic often do so for multiple reasons — ethical, environmental, nutritional, or flavour-driven. But increasingly, welfare at the point of slaughter is part of that equation. We welcome that shift.

By being open about irreversible stunning, proximity to abattoirs, non-Halal processing and organic certification, we hope to support informed decision-making and reinforce trust in the food our customers bring home.

Our Ongoing Commitment to Transparency

We’re proud to offer meat that is:

  • Ethically and humanely processed

  • Non-Halal and never religiously slaughtered

  • Traceable from field to fork

  • Certified organic at every stage

  • handled with the highest welfare standards

If you’d like more detail, we are happy to provide abattoir codes, answer questions, or discuss welfare standards further — just get in touch with our customer service team.

Thank you for this clarity. Its good to know that the Soil Association Organic certification sets out slaughter criteria. I think there has been a creep towards religious slaughter as a one size fits all practice due to Supermarkets etc being cost efficient.

Excellent article, no judgment, pure facts stated. If only all consumers realised the truth and where the future needs help from the informed few, hopefully soon to be informed masses.

Thank you for a clear and detailed explanation of your animal welfare.
Whilst I have researched this practice myself over the years, it is good to see it laid out in print – especially when so many people are worried about religious killing methods.

Thank you for this transparency. It’s really important to me to understand and is the reason I’m choosing to eat meat only that I buy from you.
