There’s something timeless about a Cottage Pie — comforting layers of rich beef, silky mash, and slow-cooked depth that warms the soul.
But this one’s a little different.
Made with our new Organic Fortified Beef Mince, this dish celebrates real nourishment — the way it should be. Each batch is crafted by our butchers using a carefully balanced blend of 95VL organic beef trim, enriched with organic beef heart and liver, creating a naturally fortified mince that’s as flavourful as it is nutrient-dense.
It’s old-fashioned goodness reimagined for modern kitchens — packed with iron, B12, and protein from 100% grass-fed, certified organic beef, and perfect for the whole family.
Ingredients (serves 4)
For the beef filling:
-
500g Organic Fortified Beef Mince
-
1 tbsp olive oil or beef dripping
-
1 large onion, finely diced
-
2 carrots, finely diced
-
2 sticks of celery, chopped
-
2 cloves garlic, crushed
-
2 tbsp tomato purée
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
-
200ml organic beef stock
-
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
-
Sea salt & cracked black pepper
For the mash topping:
-
800g organic potatoes, peeled and chopped
-
50g organic butter
-
Splash of organic whole milk or cream
-
Pinch of nutmeg
-
Sea salt to taste
Method
1. Brown the mince
In a large pan, heat the oil or dripping until hot. Add the Organic Fortified Beef Mince and cook until richly browned. This step develops that deep, savoury flavour from the organ-enriched blend. Remove from the pan and set aside.
2. Build the base
In the same pan, gently fry the onion, carrot, and celery until softened — around 10 minutes. Add the garlic, tomato purée, and thyme, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
3. Simmer slowly
Return the mince to the pan. Stir in Worcestershire sauce (if using) and pour in the beef stock. Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until the mixture is rich and slightly reduced. Season to taste.
4. Make the mash
Boil the potatoes until tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until smooth and creamy.
5. Assemble and bake
Spoon the beef mixture into an ovenproof dish. Top with the mash, roughing up the surface with a fork for crisp edges.
Bake at 200°C (180°C fan) for 20–25 minutes, until golden and bubbling.
To Serve
Pair with seasonal organic greens — we love buttery cabbage or kale — and a generous spoonful of horseradish cream on the side.
This fortified cottage pie is pure comfort food, but better — brimming with the full-bodied flavour and nourishment that only organically reared, grass-fed beef can provide. It’s a celebration of traditional butchery, thoughtful eating, and food that truly feeds you.
